 4K Restoration of David Lean’s Masterpiece Receives Top Honors; Sony Pictures’ Grover Crisp Recognized for “Outstanding Achievement in Restoration”
The newly-restored, 50th Anniversary Directors Cut of David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia took home the award for “Best Archive Restoration/Preservation Title” at the tenth FOCAL International Awards held May 2nd in London. The 4K restoration of the film was completed last year by Sony Pictures Entertainment under the direction of Grover Crisp, EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering for SPE. Crisp also received a special, individual award for “Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Film Restoration and Preservation.”

It will deliver both HD masters for current distribution and 4K masters for future use.

Colorworks recently provided post production services for Fresh Guacamole, an animated short from writer/director PES that was recently short-listed for Academy Award consideration. The facility performed color grading and DCP mastering so that the short film could be screened in theaters as part of the qualifying process for Academy Award consideration.

The job was to return the film as close as possible to its original version, which involved restoring over 100 shots. Cineric in New York dug up the missing trims and provided the 4K wet-gate scan, and Crisp brought in MTI Film for much of the restoration, including creating missing frames.
