Promoting Open Standards for Visual Effects
Seven companies joined forces at NAB last month to launch The Open Effects Association. This non-profit, UK-based company aims to develop and promote open standards across the visual effects community. Founding members are Assimilate, Autodesk®, Digieffects, FilmLight, The Foundry, GenArts® and RE:Vision Effects. These companies have helped artists create ground-breaking VFX shots on just about everything that hits cinema screens.

Fujinon will introduce new PL Mount Zoom Lenses at the 2009 NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nev., April 20-23, 2009 (Booth C7116). The 18-85mm T2.0 (Model Number HK4.7x18F) will be the first of the lenses in the series introduced. It has an anticipated May delivery date. This lens will be shown on working cameras in Fujinon's booth and within Sony's booth (C11001). Three other zoom lenses in the PL series include: the 14.5-45mm T2.0, 24-180mm T2.6, and 75-400mm T2.8 - T4.0 - with an anticipated delivery of December 2009.

In the world of graphics production, few books attain legendary status. In the past decade, two come to mind: David Biedny's ''Photoshop Channel Chops'' and Trish & Chris Meyer's ''Creating Motion Graphics.'' Well, if I were to pick another book that could stand right alongside these two titles and hold its own -- it would be Steve Wright's ''Digital Compositing for Film & Video.'' Some would read that and ask: ''Have you lost your mind, Boomer?'' To that, I can only answer that in 6.5 years of building forums-based communities online, we have met few people who have mastered what's in this book. Even fewer can articulate this mastery. Steve is one who has accomplished both. Buy it -- unless you could have written it yourself.
