News : Thomson Presents End-to-End Film and Digital Cinematography, Post Production, and Digital Cinema Services to Chinese Film Industry

Thomson Sponsors Franco-Chinese Panorama Film Festival, part of the Year of France in China

Last Updated: April 7, 2005 5:54 pm GMT
(PARIS & BEIJING-BUSINESS WIRE-April 7, 2005 ) Thomson (NYSE:TMS) (Euronext Paris: 18453) will conduct a seminar on the range of digital cinematography and digital post production workflows as well as the film preservation and digital cinema services available to the Chinese Media & Entertainment industry on April 9th in Beijing, China.

The event is part of Thomson's sponsorship of the 10-day Panorama Film Festival and highlights the importance of China in the Group's drive to broaden its Media & Entertainment client base and grow activities such as post-production, broadcast and electronic content distribution within the framework of a Two Year Plan.

Film Restoration

Thomson provides film restoration and post production capabilities through its Technicolor activity, part of the Group's Services division. At the seminar, Paul Stambaugh, director of Technicolor Bangkok, will provide details on the high quality services available to preserve the rich Asian history that has been captured on film over the years and encourage members of the Asian film community to get involved in the preservation effort.

"National Film Archives all around Asia have thousands of film titles which could be preserved and restored. Through its Technicolor activity, Thomson is committed to this effort of preservation and restoration and pledges to work with Archives and private studios around the region to determine best how to protect their assets," says Mr. Stambaugh.

Digital Cinematography and Digital Post Production Workflows

At the Panorama Film Festival, Thomson will also demonstrate the digital cinematography and digital post production workflows offered by Grass Valley, part of the Group's Systems & Equipment division. These workflows, which offer a fully integrated, end-to-end digital approach, are used by film and commercial production leaders worldwide.

For example, the Grass Valley Viper Filmstream camera can capture the full range of information a scene has to offer, from ambient environments to high-intensity lighting scenes. Since this information is captured digitally - and is uncompromised by any video signal processing - directors have the maximum latitude in the field and in post production to create the exact look they want. This information-capturing ability also enables the cinematographer to meet whatever environmental or technical demands their projects require. Whether the production is being shot with the Viper camera or film or a mix of both, the Grass Valley Specter FS platform communicates directly with other creative tools, including Grass Valley's Spirit DataCine and Spirit 4K datacine sytems as well as other Grass Valley digital production tools.

Digital Cinema Services

Finally, Thomson will present the capabilities of its Services division in a full range of digital cinema services. Today, Thomson is an industry leader in digital cinema through its Technicolor Digital Cinema business and is targeting opportunities in the growing global market for digital content preparation, distribution and services as part of its Two Year Plan. To date, the company has managed the processing and distribution of over 80 feature titles representing more than 225,000 digital presentations. Thomson looks forward to co-operating with China's leading media groups to further develop the cinema exhibition business in China through the introduction of its world class technology and service offering.
