News : Panasonic Premieres Compact AJ-HD1400 DVCPRO HD VTR With Editing Capabilities For Desktop And Field Apps

Last Updated: April 26, 2006 6:44 pm GMT
(LAS VEGAS, NV - April 26, 2006) Building on the success of its compact, IEEE 1394-equipped AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD VTR, Panasonic unveiled at NAB its successor, the AJ-HD1400, featuring comprehensive editing capabilities. This new AC/DC-powered, multi-purpose HD VTR is a valuable production tool for uses ranging from field recording to nonlinear and in-studio editing.

Two years ago, the introduction of the AJ-HD1200A was heralded as a breakthrough because it made possible the transfer of native 100Mbps DVCPRO HD content into NLE systems for editing of cameral-original quality HD material on the desktop via IEEE 1394. The AJ-HD1200A has been a catalyst to rapidly expand the use of HD content in field production, post-production and distribution.

Now, the AJ-HD1400 delivers all its predecessor’s capabilities plus comprehensive assemble/insert editing functions controlled by either the RS422 9-pin or IEEE 1394 interfaces. The VTR features HD-SDI in/out and SD-SDI out for applications such as line recording and in-studio production, and supports VANC metadata (UMID, CC, et al.) and also encoder remote control (component/composite style). It incorporates a built-in up/down/cross converter, so that users can play back DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV tapes and output a converted HD signal. Utilizing the advanced DVCPRO HD codec, the AJ-HD1400 supports superior 4:2:2 color sampling and independent frame compression.

Only ½ rack-width wide and 18 pounds light, the AJ-HD1400 can record up to 64 minutes of HD footage on a single, compact cassette (AJ-HP64ELG). The VTR can play the entire family of DVCPRO tapes—DVCPRO HD and HD-EX, DVCPRO50 and standard DVCPRO, as well as any DV and DVCAM tapes. Its universal design also allows playback of both NTSC (480i) and PAL (576i) tapes.

The AJ-HD1400 supports multiple U.S. and worldwide HD/SD formats including 1080/59.94, 1080/50i, 720/60p, 720/59.94p and 720/50p, and it can convert from an AJ-HDC27 VariCam 50p recording (over 60p) source to native 720p/50 or PAL output, making it an exceptionally useful tool for producing HD/SD content for worldwide distribution. The AJ-HD1400 is a perfect complement to the AJ-HDC27 VariCam and new AJ-HDX900 DVCPRO HD camcorder.

The VTR offers a multitude of conversion capabilities between image formats and frame rates. Digital audio with up to eight embedded channels ensures high sound quality.

The AJ-HD1400 will be available in July at a suggested list price of $25,000 (including HD-SDI and IEEE 1394 in/outputs and format conversion,
