(August 24 , 2006 - Cincinnati) Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) today announced that it will be presenting 14 one-hour seminar sessions demonstrating Harris technology leadership in key areas such as Digital Radio, Mobile TV, IPTV and HD during the 2006 International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) being held September 8-12 in Amsterdam. Aimed at industry professionals who work in all aspects of broadcast, production, post production, mobile and Internet environments, these seminars will be held across all five days of the show and will take place in the Training Zone in Hall 8 at the RAI Convention Centre.
The following presentations will be given at IBC:
Digital Radio: Audio & Beyond
Rich Redmond, Director of Strategic Marketing, Radio Systems Business Unit
A look at the various digital radio standards and the vast array of additional services these platforms offer. This discussion will explore the main digital radio standards, implementation implications, spectrum required and the questions you should ask to determine which standard or standards would be right for your organization. Harris is the only technology partner that supports all the digital standards — DAB/DMB-T, DRM and HD Radio — and can help you expand your service offerings beyond basic audio.
High Definition Television – Basics & Beyond
Jochen Kuhnen, Market Manager, Videotek® Test & Measurement Products
This presentation covers the basics of high-definition television signals, their similarities and differences compared to standard-definition signals, and how to effectively monitor these signals to ensure compliance to production and broadcast standards. Harris will also impart its experience in HD encoding and the pitfalls associated with formats for video and audio — including AES, embedded, and Dolby® formats — and the difficulties with getting a signal on the air that presents a good user experience.
IP Television
John Delay, Director, Strategic Management Networking Solutions
Covering the basics of IPTV television signals, this presentation will look at the architecture of a network operations center and its distributed network services required to originate and deliver broadcast and On-Demand services. Particular reference will be made to workflows, infrastructure and performance verification technologies required to monetize content. Workflows required to acquire and deliver advertising in a distributed network environment will also be examined.
Mobile Television: Considerations in Choosing an RF Frequency Band for Mobile Television
Dave Glidden, Director TV Strategic Marketing & Business Development
As potential Mobile TV operators consider a strategy for deploying a Mobile TV network, a critical area of concern is the optimal RF frequency to use for broadcasting multimedia content to mobile devices. In many areas of the world, UHF frequencies are being planned for services such as DVB-H and FLO™, but other bands — from 175 MHz to 2700 MHz — are being considered as well. Availability and cost of spectrum are key considerations, but many other aspects need to be considered as well, including maximum allowed power, potential deployment sites, effects on adjacent services, available RF channel bandwidth, propagation characteristics, potential handset antenna gain and overall cost of implementation. This paper will survey the issues and characteristics of each of the major bands and present a framework for decision-making when choosing an RF Frequency Band for Mobile Television.
