News : Blackmagic Design Announces On-Air 2.0

Real Time HD Live Event Video Mixing Using Affordable Consumer Video Cameras

Last Updated: September 8, 2006 5:39 pm GMT
(IBC2006, Amsterdam, Netherlands – September 8, 2006) Blackmagic Design Inc. today announced On-Air 2.0, the newest version of our popular real time video mixer that supports multiple capture cards for multi camera mixing. On-Air 2.0 includes a new "auto-sync" feature that eliminates the need for expensive genlockable video cameras. On-Air can be seen on Blackmagic Design’s IBC 2006 stand located at #7.526.

On-Air has become popular with users who require instant results. On-Air 2.0 allows a much faster workflow because your edit is completed the moment the event is finished, because it's all mixed live. That's absolutely critical when content needs to be instantly available after the performance. With On-Air 2.0, Blackmagic Design has made real time mixing dramatically more affordable for everyone.

“Blackmagic Design has been dedicated to making uncompressed HD video editing affordable for the last 10 years, and this has created a new ecosystem of products that have totally revolutionized the video editing industry. However, I feel we can go much further," said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design Inc. "On-Air is the product that allows live production to benefit from the same advantages we have enjoyed in video editing.”

On-Air 2.0 supports Blackmagic Design's new Intensity HDMI capture card:

On-Air 2.0 supports the new Intensity HDMI capture board announced by Blackmagic Design at IBC 2006. With two Intensity boards plugged into the computer, an HDMI video camera can be connected to each of Intensity's HDMI inputs. On-Air 2.0 will automatically recognize the video inputs, and then the live production can begin.

By using two low cost video capture cards, customers get a much lower cost live mixing solution, as each Intensity board retails for only US$249. This adds up to a sub $500 solution that's completely uncompressed, and full 1920 x 1080 HDTV resolution.

Work with genlock-free low cost cameras:

Unlike normal live video switchers, On-Air 2.0 eliminates the need to use cameras that have genlock connections. Genlock is normally required, so cameras can be synced to a vision mixer for live mixing. However On-Air 2.0 features auto-sync technology that automatically synchronizes the video cameras without the need for genlock.

This means any camera can be connected to a computer running On-Air 2.0 and mixed in real time. This allows much lower cost cameras such as consumer HDV cameras to be used, dramatically lowering overall costs. Now all videographers and those who specialize in education, corporate production, wedding video, religious events can benefit from real time live mixing with multiple cameras - all in HD and with uncompressed quality if required

On-Air 2.0 is a fully self contained software application with the following powerful features:

- Supports 2 video cameras for live event mixing
- Supports graphics for live keying of graphics over live video
- Displays live video of camera input views
- Displays program view of recorded video
- Captures uncompressed and compressed SD and HD video to disk
- Displays "tally" red boarders around camera views when cameras are "on-air"
- Displays red board on program windows when recording to disk
- All camera and program views are in a single window that fits a 20-inch display
- Compatible with any Core Audio audio input device for sound recording
- On-Air 2.0 is free for all Blackmagic Design customers who use Intensity

“Following the success of On-Air since its launched at NAB 2006, we are now following up with this exciting enhancement that allows two low cost capture cards to be used with low cost cameras, that don't even need to have a genlock feature. When used with our new Intensity board you get a real time digital HD live production studio for less than $500 to use with two consumer HDV cameras with HDMI. This is one of our proudest moments,” continued Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design Inc.

Availability and Price

On-Air 2.0 will be included free with every Blackmagic Design Intensity board, and will be available when Intensity ships in mid October.
