(AMSTERDAM, Netherlands--BUSINESS WIRE--Sept. 8, 2006) Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) today announced that Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT), a leading provider of IP-based digital video and broadband networking solutions, is supporting Dolby® Digital Plus, Dolby's next-generation audio technology for high-definition (HD) programming, in its recently introduced encoder.
Harmonic's new DiviCom® Electra™ 7000 high-definition MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) encoder delivers unmatched HD services with superior video quality and audio support for Dolby Digital Plus through Dolby's recently announced Cat. No. 561 Dolby Digital Plus OEM Encoder Module.
With Dolby Digital Plus, Harmonic's Electra 7000 offers a best-in-class audio and HD video solution at ultra-low bit-rates, maximizing service carrying capacity for satellite, telco/IPTV, cable and terrestrial operators.
"To implement a successful HD service, operators need high performance compression solutions that can provide the best quality video and audio," said Arnaud Perrier, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Advanced and HD Encoding at Harmonic Inc. "At Harmonic, we are committed to meeting these needs with innovative products such as the DiviCom Electra 7000, which sets a new standard for HD video delivery. Together with Dolby, we can offer an integrated audio and video solution for the next generation of HD. Dolby Digital Plus offers the efficiency, backward compatibility with Dolby Digital, and quality that not only reduce overall bandwidth utilization, but more importantly improve the viewer's listening experience."
"Dolby Digital Plus was designed to complement H.264 in quality and efficiency for any application in which reduced bandwidth is a requirement," said Rocky Graham, Director of Broadcast Products, Dolby Laboratories. "With next-generation systems such as IPTV, Dolby Digital Plus offers broadcasters the flexibility to deliver high-quality audio at a reduced data rate."
The DiviCom Electra 7000 encoder will be featured at the 2006 International Broadcasters Conference (IBC), September 8-12 in Amsterdam in Harmonic's booth 1.361. Dolby will be demonstrating Dolby Digital Plus in a simulated IPTV configuration at IBC in booth 2.218.
All set-top boxes with Dolby Digital Plus decoders provide an output stream fully compatible with all current A/V receivers that are enabled with Dolby Digital. To learn more about Dolby technologies, please visit http://www.dolby.com
