News : Sony adds to line of CineAlta high-end videotape recorders

New Deck Supports HDCAM SR Recording and Playback with Multi-format Capabilities for TV, Motion Picture, Commercial and Live Production

Last Updated: April 17, 2007 10:34 pm GMT
(LAS VEGAS, NAB Booth SU906, April 15, 2007) Sony is expanding its CineAlta ™ family of high-end content creation products with the new SRW-5800 videotape recorder, a studio edit deck with HDCAM SR™ recording and playback capability.

The new deck supports 4:2:2 1080 50P/60P recording, and is designed to accommodate multiple distribution formats such as 1080 50i/60i and 720/50P/60P.

The SRW-5800 joins Sony's line of HDCAM SR decks, including the SRW-5000 and SRW-5500, which have been adopted in a range of production applications including episodic TV programming, commercials, sports and digital cinematography as a high-end mastering format. Since the format's introduction in 2003, more than 3,400 units of Sony SRW products have been delivered worldwide.

"The HDCAM SR format has become quickly accepted for TV and motion picture production, as well as for high-end post production and computer graphics," said Robert Willox, director of content creation products in Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Production Systems Division. "With its ability to handle multiple formats, this VTR's functionality is well suited for a range of HD production applications."

The deck has 880 Mbps recording capability, supporting 4:2:2 1080/50P, 60P and 4:4:4 1080 HQ recording modes, which were currently only available in Sony's SRW-1 HDCAM SR portable recorder. In addition, the deck can accommodate up to two times off-speed playback of 25fps and 30fps content over 1080/50P and 1080/60P transmission lines.

Playback compatibility with the HDCAM and Digital Betacam formats is available.

Complementing all HDCAM SR VTRs is Sony's full line of BCT-SR Series HDCAM SR digital videocassettes. These cassettes, designed and co-engineered to fully maximize the benefits of 4:4:4 RGB recording technology, are the result of Sony's most advanced metal tape technology yet, enabling the faithful capture and reproduction of the format's startling HD image quality.

HDCAM SR recording media uses ultrafine high performance metal particles 50 percent smaller than those in Sony's HDCAM tape applied in the thinnest magnetic coating, to enable wavelength recording to 0.29mm. The result is up to +7dB higher output than HDCAM tape.

The SRW-5800 VTR accepts large and small cassettes and is planned to be available at the end of this year, with suggested list pricing still to be determined.
