Provides VFX for New Campaign Spoofing Sci-fi, Monster, and Spy Movies

(Santa Monica, California--January 16, 2008) Eight VFX takes viewers to a galaxy far, far away in the first of three new spots for Capital One.

Expanding your "Galactic Empire" can be a daunting task. In this spot, a ruthless emperor begins by building out his base to spec. He's about to mobilize his massive army for a galactic takeover and he wants everything just so. The fearless leader reveals a soft side: in addition to creating an imposing military base, he wants images of cuddly kittens on his crest. Fortunately, his Capital One card should help him get it all done. As with all the spots, Capital One info flashes on huge screens, integrated into each ad.

For "Galactic Empire", Eight created an entirely CG environment, complete with the seemingly infinite army of troopers, spaceships and utility vehicles that populate the station. Hatch contributed matte paintings to add dimension to the space station and to the vast galaxy outside.

The only practical elements were the two lead actors and the platform on which they stand.

From previsualization and on-set supervision through post, Eight's team brought all of the vfx elements together. "I think this was a first in terms of combining the countless elements that had to be created for this project," Demmer noted.

The spots all have a tonge-in-cheek Mel Brooks feel to them, but, as Eight VFX Supervisor Jean-Marc Demmer pointed out, "the light comedic touches meant the environments needed to be rooted in reality to make it play properly." Station, explosions, and other bells and whistles aside, most challenging was the creation and mobilization of the enormous army, according to Demmer. "There are large armies and there are vast armies - and this was a vast army, all CG."

Bringing to mind the classic "Frankenstein" movies, a second spot centers on a "Mad Scientist" using Capital One to finance his radical reanimation experiments.

A CG rocket and shark tank are among the effects created by Eight for "Mega Villain", which spoofs Bond villains and suggests that if they'd use Capital One they might have better luck defeating heroes - and avoiding creditors.

The campaign marks Eight's first collaboration with DDB Chicago, one that has proved gratifying for both agency and effect house.

"Working in three film genres, doing everything from adding subtle touches to creating entire environments, was wonderful for us," said Eight VFX Executive Producer Baptiste Andrieux.
