Last Updated: March 13, 2009 4:37 pm GMT
(Barcelona, Spain--March 13, 2009) The 900 students at the new Communications Campus of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Catalonia, which offers degrees in journalism, audiovisual communications, advertising and public relations, now have the opportunity to discover and implement P2 HD technology from Panasonic.

The University has purchased 21 AG-HPX171 cameras, three AG-HPX500 cameras and one AJ-HPX3000 camera, along with AJ-PCD20E transfer units and 32 GB P2 memory cards to be used at the recently inaugurated Communications Campus in Barcelona.

P2 HD technology has already been adopted by more than 85 percent of the main European broadcasters who have opted to implement tapeless technology and who are setting the future technological standards as regards to the acquisition, editing and broadcasting of images, thus making knowledge of this technology indispensable for future communications professionals.

The Communications Campus forms part of the Parc Barcelona Media initiative, which includes the UPF, the Barcelona Municipal Council, the company 22@ and Mediapro, Spain's leading group of audiovisual communications companies.

Located in the Poblenou district of Barcelona, the UPF Communications Campus is the result of a 50 million euro investment and, with a surface of 34,000 square metres, is an audiovisual technology park, facility and services platform aimed at providing training, innovation and audiovisual production and services to the industry. Facilities available on the campus include an audiovisual production centre, which with a surface of 5,000 square metres, houses several television sets and editing and production halls.

"The UPF needed to renew its entire stock of ENG video cameras in order for students to get valuable, hands on experience," says Albert Barrera, Head of the UPF Audiovisual Department. "With this enhancement to state-of-the-art professional gear, the UPF is experiencing a technological revolution. The equipment provides a true professional working environment, thus allowing for high-quality university training."

"UPF students now have the advantage of working with the most advanced production tools available on the market," says Toni Feliu, Manager of PBITS Spain. "The variety of cameras and the P2 technology available at UPF means that students at the new Communications Campus will be able to take advantage of creative features, such as variable frame rates, AVC-Intra 100 quality, cinema-quality HD images, as well as the exceptional workflow that P2 HD file-based operation provides."

"Students at this prestigious university are the communications professionals of tomorrow, and the fact that they are able to adapt to our image acquisition and editing technology will facilitate their professional transition, making it quicker, easier and more effective," says Feliu. "It is therefore essential for them to become familiar with new technologies during university, and this agreement with Pompeu Fabra allows us to further advance the reach of our technology to the educational environment."
