News : da Vinci's Impresario™ Goes Global With Worldwide Sales

Last Updated: April 15, 2009 4:51 pm GMT
(Coral Springs, Florida--April 15, 2009) da Vinci Systems, LLC, today announced that its new Impresario™ control surface is being purchased by post-production houses worldwide.

Reasserting itself as the preeminent technology leader in control surfaces for post-production color grading and image transformation, da Vinci has released Impresario to provide colorists with an ergonomically designed, intuitive, and customizable control panel that adds value to the post-production suite and accelerates workflow. Impresario represents the latest generation of da Vinci's trackball-driven control panel, first introduced by the company two decades ago. da Vinci will provide hands-on demonstrations of Impresario, as well as displays of its legacy panels, during the 2009 NAB Show, April 20 through 23, in booth SL3314 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Impresario's design combines form and function. Surrounding colorists with a cockpit-like feel, the panel's triple-function trackballs, tactile keys, and software-control knobs provide colorists with more intimate and immediate control of their color-grading experience. Menus and controls are at the control panel's top level, providing immediate and faster control for colorists over the color grading process. The Impresario supports all of the Resolve® R-series systems, and will support 2K® and Splice™ 2K systems in 2009.

The Impresario, which began shipping in late 2008, has been sold to post-production facilities in Los Angeles, London, Italy, New York, and Singapore. Blackmagic Design in Singapore was the first company to purchase the new Impresario.

"Everything about the Impresario emphasizes user friendliness," said Adrian Ooi, senior colorist for Blackmagic Design. "Its user-defined preferences reflect a great deal about da Vinci's knowledge on the workings of a colorist. We have to sit long hours at a stretch, which can be both physically and mentally tiring. But, with the many details fine-tuned on the Impresario, it's now a more comfortable experience. Once you get used to where the buttons are located, you can master Impresario in a heartbeat."

To further accommodate individual preferences, Impresario's highly sensitive controls enable colorists to precisely adjust their color corrections. An integrated track pad and keyboard enables FX and editing professionals who are unfamiliar with the control surface to transition to the powerful R-series without a steep learning curve.

"Many of Impresario's controls now have individual resets with accurate feedback of each tweaked setting, and this assists us in exploring many different creative approaches in a project quickly," said Charlie Ellis, senior colorist and post manager for Blackmagic Design. "The new layout brings a fresh new focal point to our clients. Resolve® and Impresario are now in a league of their own."

Impresario's functions are modifiable to individual preferences. Control panels can be swapped from left to right to match individual users. Grouped soft keys are in a flexible arrangement to accommodate two-handed use. Software-driven functions are customizable and can be saved by each user.

"Impresario has more menus and functions available at my finger tips, which makes working easier and faster," said U.S.-based freelance colorist Tom Rovak. "Everything I want to do is very accessible. Impresario is the future of color correction."

With plans to make the Impresario compatible with its 2K Plus™ and the non-linear Splice 2K systems in 2009, the new control environment will reinforce the value of da Vinci equipment. As customers upgrade 2Ks to Splice 2Ks or the R-series, they can utilize Impresario's comprehensive control over nonlinear color grading.

"Impresario's adoption by color grading facilities worldwide reflects the value of the control environment's power and performance in the hero suite," said Dean Lyon, da Vinci's vice president of marketing. "As the fourth generation of control panels developed by da Vinci, the Impresario reflects the highest level of technology and design possible for professional colorists. Impresario's design and functionality puts colorists comfortably at the center of their operating environment. Colorists can work more quickly, efficiently, and creatively to transform the look and feel of their clients' motion pictures and commercials."
