(Madison, Wisconsin--October 24, 2011) Sony Creative Software, a global provider of professional video editing, music creation and optical disc authoring solutions, today announced it is acquiring NetBlender, a leading developer of Blu-ray Disc™ creation tools. Through the agreement, Sony Creative Software will acquire NetBlender's DoStudio product line of authoring applications to expand its current portfolio of Blu-ray Disc software products which currently includes DVD Architect™ and Blu-print®.

The DoStudio product line perfectly complements Sony Creative Software's existing lineup and is ideal for users in post-production facilities, news organizations, educational institutions, corporate training facilities, cable TV outlets, Hollywood studios and for independent film producers who are looking to acquire affordably priced, high-value solutions.

"Many Blu-ray Disc authoring tools that are priced at the prosumer level have very limited feature sets compared to enterprise or studio level applications. The DoStudio line of products bridges the gap between these platforms by offering access to many of the Blu-ray special features that provide comprehensive mastering functionality at a more reasonable price structure," said Brad Reinke, Senior Vice President, Sony Creative Software. "The acquisition of NetBlender will allow us to continue to deliver industry-standard tools that address these issues, as well as having the resources to offer new capabilities such as Blu-ray 3D and Custom BD-J within this new product line. We look forward to working with and supporting NetBlender's loyal customers who have come to rely on these solutions for their multimedia production needs."

Based in Alexandria, Va., NetBlender established itself as an innovator in Blu-ray Disc tools and has garnered a strong professional authoring customer base spanning 31 countries. NetBlender's products have produced more than 2,000 retail Blu-ray Disc titles to date.

"NetBlender and Sony Creative Software share the same passion for expanding Blu-ray adoption among independent production companies and post houses worldwide," said John Harrington, CEO of NetBlender. "The combination of NetBlender's innovative products and Sony's market leadership will be a powerful force for encouraging growth in the Blu-ray industry."

Sony Creative Software and NetBlender will continue to provide customer service and technical support throughout the transition. NetBlender's current resources, products, case studies, manuals and community portals will remain active and available on the company's website until the acquisition is complete.

lol....Have a point, but normally if this goes like
most acquisitions, When its integrated into the new
owners programs, the price is normally reduced drastically.

Yup. My first DVD authoring application was Pinnacle Impression, which ran around $350 in the early 90s. Before Pinnacle bought it, it was Minerva Impression, it cost many thousands.

Overall, a miserable program; the single buggiest thing I have ever used successfully for real work. Sony could well decide to re-price it for lower end work. In a weird way, that might actually work. They can't be selling that many seats at up to $10K, but at those levels, it's also possibly seen as a Blu Print competitor. And certainly some of that price is the $10K level of support. Drop it to a max of $1K, offer the support levels we're used to, and it may both wipe the floor with other BD programs in that range AND take pressure off BluPrint.

With the cost of USB memory sticks plummeting, my customers are requesting to have 'blu-ray' content delivered on 32GB memory sticks, which they then play off a media centre. I wonder if NetBlender is intended for/supports that means of delivery.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6
Re: News: Sony Creative Software Announces Acquisition of NetBlender

You could do that with DVDA, but the problem you would run into is that USB memory sticks may not spew the data fast enough for video.

While it's true that there isn't a speed rating for USB memory sticks, I have yet to find a USB 2.0 stick that's slower than about 10MB/s read... the 32GB stick I have in my desktop hub benchmarks at 18.7MB/s read on a few random video files. That 10MB/s is equivalent to a class 10 SDHC card, faster than a standard Profile 2.0 Blu-ray (BD peak read is around 40Mb/s, 3D specs go to 80Mb/s).

I would still have concerns. I get 10MB/s on a PC, but other devices may read slower. I can't permanently write-protect a USB drive (I can WP files, but you can still format it accidently). If I had demand for these, I'd supply tested drives, but it's up to the customer to deal with these other issues. And the fact it'll probably lose its memory 10 years from now... an HTL-type Blu-ray should last much longer.
