Composer John Williams was honored with the American Film Institute's (AFI) 44th Life Achievement Award on Thursday, June 9, in an evening filled with music and memories from his treasured collaborators, including J.J. Abrams, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. This marked the first time in history that America's highest honor for a career in film was bestowed upon a composer. The televised special, AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO JOHN WILLIAMS, will air on TNT June 15 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT), followed by an encore presentation on sister network Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on September 12 during a night of programming dedicated to Williams.

Today, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced the slate of films for AFI DOCS 2016, running June 22–26 in Washington, DC, and Silver Spring, MD. The 14th edition showcases 94 films representing 30 countries, including three world premieres, seven North American premieres, three U.S. premieres, 12 East Coast premieres and one international premiere. AFI DOCS 2016 screenings will take place in Washington, DC, at the Newseum and the Landmark E Street Cinema, and in Silver Spring, MD, at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center.

The American Film Institute has announced its collaboration with the White House on the third annual White House Student Film Festival, to be held in late summer 2016. Participant Media, a global entertainment company focused on inspiring social change, joins AFI in support of their work with young filmmakers of the White House Student Film Festival for a second year. Open to K-12 student filmmakers, the theme of this year’s festival is "The World I Want to Live In." Young storytellers are now encouraged to submit their short films based on this theme at WhiteHouse.Gov/FilmFest.

The American Film Institute will host its annual AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women (DWW) Showcase on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) in Los Angeles. The event provides an opportunity for the program’s 2015 participants to premiere their work to an invitation-only audience of representatives and working artists from throughout the creative community. The opening keynote will be delivered by the evening’s guest of honor, Sarah Gertrude Shapiro (AFI DWW, Class of 2012), the co-creator and executive producer of Lifetime’s critically acclaimed UNREAL, which she developed from her DWW short film SEQUIN RAZE.

The New Auteurs Grand Jury Award was presented to LAND AND SHADE, while DISORDER received a Special Jury Mention for Direction, and DESDE ALLÁ received a Special Jury Mention for Screenplay.
