About Art Directors Guild

The Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) represents 2,500 members who work throughout the United States, Canada and the rest of the world in film, television and theater as Production Designers, Art Directors, Assistant Art Directors; Scenic, Title and Graphic Artists; Illustrators and Matte Artists; Set Designers and Model Makers; and Previs Artists. Established in 1937, the ADG’s ongoing activities include a Film Society, an annual Awards Banquet, a creative/technology community (5D: The Future of Immersive Design), a bimonthly craft magazine (Perspective); and extensive technology-training programs, figure drawing and other creative workshops and year-round Gallery 800 art exhibitions. ADG Film Society Announces 2018 Screening Series Presented with the American Cinematheque
Award-Winning Production Designers Are Focus of Film Series at the Egyptian and Aero Theatres
The Art Directors Guild (ADG) Film Society and the American Cinematheque are co-hosting the annual 2018 Screening Series “Production Design: Designers On Design” highlighting the work of renowned Production Designers and their creative collaborations. The monthly series will run from April through August, and the screenings will alternate between the American Cinematheque’s Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the Egyptian (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood) and the Max Palevsky Theatre at the Aero (1328 Montana Avenue, Santa Monica) with all screenings starting at 5:30 pm.

The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800), Founding Sponsor of Eagle-Con, has announced their event during the three-day Sci-Fi convention at Cal State LA from March 8-10. ADG panels feature Nelson Coates and ADG President; Chuck Parker, ADG Executive Director, for discussions on the Labor movement, entertainment, art, sci-fi, fantasy, race, gender identity and sexuality. Eagle-Con brings together a diverse range of students and the professionals behind science fiction TV-shows, fantasy novels, comic book movies and superheroes comics, while discussing topics such as ableism and ethnicity. Additionally, the ADG will host an exhibit with over 300 pieces of production art that reflect the theme of this years’ convention: Aliens, Monsters and Others.

Duncan Alanson Spencer (1911-1999), the legendary Scenic Artist behind some of Hollywood’s greatest films, will be honored by the Art Directors Guild Gallery 800 (ADG, IATSE Local 800) in a special exhibit entitled “The Golden Brush: A Tribute to Duncan Alanson Spencer.” Spencer’s career spanned over 38 years and over 400 movies including The Wizard of Oz, White Christmas, Meet Me in St. Louis and Ziegfeld Follies. The Art Directors Guild (ADG) Film Society and American Cinematheque will present a special screening of THE BELOVED ROGUE (1927), the little seen silent epic starring John Barrymore and designed by Academy Award®-winning Production Designer William Cameron Menzies, the artist for whom the credit Production Designer was invented, on Sunday, May 22, at 5:30 PM at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood). The program, which also includes selections from Menzies’ celebrated films, will be moderated by ADG Film Society co-chair Production Designer John Muto (Home Alone) with a live piano accompaniment performed by Cliff Retallick. Winners Announced at Art Directors Guild AwardsThe Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) tonight announced winners of its 20th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards, in 11 categories of film, television, commercials and music videos during a black-tie ceremony at The Beverly Hilton. “The Martian” (Arthur Max), “Mad Max: Fury Road” (Colin Gibson) and “The Revenant” (Jack Fisk) won Best Production Design for Feature Film. Television winners included “Game of Thrones” (Deborah Riley), “House of Cards” (Steve Arnold), “American Horror Story: Hotel” (Mark Worthington), “The Big Bang Theory” (John Shaffner) and “The Muppets” (Denise Pizzini) respectively. The awards took place before an audience of more than 900, including guild members, industry executives and press. ADG President Nelson Coates and Art Directors Council Chair Marcia Hinds presided over the awards ceremony with comedian Owen Benjamin serving as host for the third year-in-a-row.

Backings presents a private showcase of 22 gigantic backdrops from famous feature films and television shows including North by Northwest (1959), The Sound of Music (1965) and Singing in the Rain (1952) in the historic scenic studio on the Sony Pictures Studios lot (formerly MGM). These exceptional backdrops, many over 100 feet long and 40 feet high, represent a wide cross-section of genres and techniques used by artisans. The J.C. Backings Studio was designed specifically to create photo-realistic artworks on a large scale for Hollywood motion pictures and is the oldest scenic studio in Hollywood’s history.

Based on the true-life story of bigamist wife-killer Henri Désiré Landru, it was the first time that Chaplin worked with Production Designer John Gabriel Beckman. The 19th Annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards honoring production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials and music videos will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2015, in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, it was announced today by ADG President Mimi Gramatky, Art Directors' Council Chairman John Shaffner and show producers Dave Blass and James Pearse Connelly.

Art Directors Name Scholarship Winners
The Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) has named this year's winners of its ADG/Richard Stiles Scholarship Awards. They are Madison Kern, daughter of Production Designer and Art Director Brandy Alexander, and Zane Toyon, son of Production Designer/Art Director Richard Toyon. They were selected from 17 applicants in a “blind” scoring, with committee members not knowing the names until the scoring was completed.
