The Art Directors Guild (ADG) Film Society and American Cinematheque will present a special screening of THE BELOVED ROGUE (1927), the little seen silent epic starring John Barrymore and designed by Academy Award®-winning Production Designer William Cameron Menzies, the artist for whom the credit Production Designer was invented, on Sunday, May 22, at 5:30 PM at the Egyptian Theatre (6712 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood). The program, which also includes selections from Menzies’ celebrated films, will be moderated by ADG Film Society co-chair Production Designer John Muto (Home Alone) with a live piano accompaniment performed by Cliff Retallick. This will be the second program of the 2016 ADG Film Series entitled “PRODUCTION DESIGN: LOOKING AT NOTHING, SEEING EVERYTHING,” sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.

Commander Chris Hadfield’s animated series teaches science through comedy
The new comedy science animation show—It’s Not Rocket Science—is a 10-episode series that has been developed using solutions and tools from leading creative software developer The Foundry. Created by retired Canadian astronaut and commander of the International Space Station Chris Hadfield, together with his son Evan, the series seeks to address current issues and misunderstood science topics, from vaccinations to climate change. An animated Commander Hadfield and his space pug Albert will use humorous narrative and anecdotes to educate viewers of all ages. The series was animated by D.C. Turner and Tracy King, the team behind the viral sensation Tim Minchin’s Storm, using a number of solutions from The Foundry. Mischief, a pen-based sketching application was used for all the concept drawing, storyboarding, mind mapping and music planning, while FLIX, The Foundry’s visual story development tool was used to create the storyboard build. Turner and King also used MODO, the 3D modeling, animation, effects and rendering package, and NUKE, a node-based digital composting application.

OptiTrack motion capture technology is powering real-time visualization for the Al-Baydha project, developed by 5D Global Studio in partnership with the University of Southern California's World Building Institute and the Al-Baydha Development Corporation. Al-Baydha, a 700 square kilometer region in Saudi Arabia home to nearly 3,000 tribal Bedouins, is an agrarian community on the verge of collapse due to livestock overgrazing.
