(Secaucus, New Jersey--January 21, 2010) Broadmoor Baptist Church (Madison, MS), which has the largest congregation in the state’s Madison County, recently opened its new Worship Center, which more than doubles the seating capacity for its two weekly Sunday services.

The Center’s sanctuary, the main worship space, is equipped with a variety of production equipment from Panasonic Broadcast, including three AG-HPX500 P2 HD camcorders configured for studio use, an AW-HE100 multi-format pan/tilt/zoom camera and AV-HS450N HD/SD switcher.

Since the inaugural service in mid-December, the Worship Center, whose audio/visual components were designed by systems integrator Memphis Audio (Memphis, TN), has housed weekly and special services, as well as two concerts and a building dedication.

“The equipment has performed flawlessly,” said Broadmoor’s Media Director Michael Bowen. “Overall, Panasonic gear is exceptionally House of Worship-friendly, both in terms of ease of use and cost-effectiveness.”

Bowen explained that the new sanctuary, which seats up to 2,500, is a non-traditional space with a central staging area designed for performance as well as sermons and liturgical readings. The three HPX500s are placed on platforms out in the congregation (roughly left, right and center) and aimed at the stage, while the HE100 is installed on a side wall for baptistery, crowd and cutaway shots. All four cameras feed the HS450N 16-input switcher that resides in the main video control room above the sanctuary. Video is output through one of the switcher’s four AUX busses to a pair of 18K projectors that send a 1080i signal to two 25’ by 14’ screens, one on either side of the main stage.

In the control room, video is fed from the HE450N’s program buss to the Worship Center’s digital signage system that displays live video in lobby areas. The HD video feed is also recorded to a hard drive to create DVDs of the services and is streamed live on the church’s web site, http://www.broadmoor.org.

“When the church moved from Jackson, MS to Madison a decade ago, we anticipated having to build out over the short term,” Bowen said. “By 2007, our services were overflowing, and we began discussions with Memphis Audio about the new worship center. We decided that it would be foolish not to invest in HD.”

“I’d been working with the HVX200 P2 HD handheld to create visual elements for our live productions, and was very impressed with the camcorder, which familiarized us with a solid-state workflow,” he continued. “When we went looking for an HD studio camera, I was disposed to look at Panasonic first, and it turned out that the HPX500 performed better, especially in low-light, and offered better value than any other model we evaluated. Panasonic also has made it very easy to switch from studio to field configuration with the HPX500, and we will use it for production as well as live work.”

“We initially looked at the HS400A switcher, but the HS450N was on the horizon and we really needed the 16 vs. the eight inputs,” Bowen said. “Our live productions often involve multiple sources as well as output requirements, and the HS450N handles these with ease.

“When you consider that our entire live production team, other than myself, consists of nonprofessional volunteers, it is amazing how intuitive they have found the new gear and how quickly they have become proficient on the production of two or more live HD productions weekly.”
