(Walnut Creek, California--February 27, 2013) XenData, a leading provider of LTO archive solutions, today announces its collaboration with NL Technology and axle Video, to provide an open standard LTO archive for Avid® Interplay® Production users.
With more than 1,400 sites deployed worldwide, Avid Interplay Production is production asset management that expands workgroup capabilities by coordinating and moving projects in parallel, and enabling producers, editors, assistants and reviewers to find, shot-list, edit, review and annotate media from anywhere.
The new open standard archive includes a XenData SX-520 Series Archive Server with near-line RAID that manages an LTO robotic tape library. The archive connects via Interplay Web Services to seamlessly move video content to the near-line RAID and LTO cartridges, while keeping metadata online in the Avid Interplay Production database. Content may be searched by using standard Avid tools such as Interplay Access. Users are also able to save their assets in their native Avid formats and can easily move them back to Avid ISIS® on-line storage for editing or play out.
In addition, the solution indexes content and supports search independently of the Avid Interplay Production database. All files written to the archive are cataloged by an extended configuration of axle Video’s browser-based asset manager. This configuration makes the entire contents of the archive searchable from any PC, Mac or iPad connected via WiFi, allowing archived files that originated in Interplay Production to be searched and retrieved by users not connected to the production workgroup.
By combining NLT’s powerful migration technology that provides the interface to Interplay Production and the massive storage offered by the XenData Archive Server, content can be moved quickly from online to a near-line position and later restored to Avid ISIS on-line storage for reuse. Since clip and sequence metadata is always online within Interplay Production, users can quickly find and decide which assets to retrieve from the archive.
The XenData SX-520 Archive Server supports a wide range of LTO tape libraries, including models from Dell, HP, IBM, Oracle, Quantum, Qualstar and Spectra Logic and scales from 125 TB to multiple petabytes of near-line LTO capacity. The archive stores files in a file-folder structure which lets the LTO archive work simultaneously with a wide range of other applications in addition to Interplay Production. For example, files may be sent to and restored from the archive by simply using Windows Explorer on a Windows client computer or Finder on a Mac.
“We are excited to partner with NL Technology and axle Video to provide the industry with a robust and reliable turn-key archive solution for Avid Interplay Production,” said Phil Storey, XenData CEO and co-founder. “It means that we are now able to deliver an open standard and cost-effective digital video archive for Interplay Production users.”
“As a team we believe that this solution makes the Avid Interplay Production system more flexible and attractive by offering a complementary open standard archiving solution,” said Sam Bogoch, CEO of axle Video. “We’re giving users an affordable, standards-based alternative that seamlessly connects to Interplay Production, providing great value and flexibility for users of Avid editing and production tools and other users as well.”
“…by combining best in class workflows, Interplay Production users now have a cost effective and powerful archive solution that fully supports file based camera workflows and nonlinear production,” said Jim McKain, NL Technology’s CEO and co-founder. “Until now many customers had relied upon video tape as the ultimate backup media. As the industry migrates to optical and flash based nonlinear camera media, the need to have a powerful LTO archive is required to fully support today’s nonlinear workflows.”
The new solution will be available from XenData Business Partners and starts at $59,900 for a configuration that will support a 125 TB LTO library, excluding the cost of the library. It will be demonstrated for the first time on the XenData booth at NAB 2013 in Las Vegas 8-11 April (booth SL12413).
