Produced by Paramount Domestic Television, the DR. PHIL show is a nationally syndicated daily one-hour talk show series that draws on Dr. Phil McGraw’s experience in psychology and human functioning. Since the show’s launch in 2002, Dr. Phil has encouraged millions of people to "get real" about their own behavior and create more positive lives.
Although the program itself follows a typical talk show format with seemingly simple cuts and transitions, Sapphire Plug-ins from GenArts play an integral part in the creation of the promotional spots and prime time specials for the show – making Sapphire an important element in the editors’ creative arsenal.
John Perry, Supervising Segment Director of DR. PHIL, explains: “Our team is responsible for the creation of the opens, promos and teasers of the DR. PHIL show as well as all the effects treatment for the specials. We have been using Sapphire Plug-ins ever since the show aired for the first time 3 years ago. I just can’t imagine doing my job without them.”
“In the very competitive environment of talk show television, promos and teasers play a huge role in keeping audience figures up. These promotional pieces have to be stylish and contain a lot of production value with sophisticated effects and titles. This is where Sapphire truly comes into its own. They really maximize the eye candy value of these opens, teasers, and promos,” Perry continues.
Running on Avid Media Composers, Sapphire Plug-ins are used for a variety of tasks on DR. PHIL. From titles and transitions to stylizing and color correcting some of the source videos, the show’s editing team really makes the most of the software’s versatility and features.
“We chose Sapphire because it has features that I have not seen in any other package,” says Tom Quick, senior editor of DR. PHIL. “As far as I know, no one else’s software has that amazing glow that Sapphire is famous for. If, like most people, you don’t have the budget or the time to send your titles for treatment to a specialized graphics and effects department, what you can do with an Avid title and Sapphire Plug-ins is quite extraordinary. We do that all the time on the show. Sapphire is just the perfect tool for jazzing up titles,” adds Quick.
A significant amount of the show’s video source is shot by viewers on VHS or DV. This is another area where Sapphire Plug-ins have proven themselves useful.
“Using a combination of the color correction tool within the Avid and FilmEffect from Sapphire Plug-ins,” continues Quick, “we are able to enhance, correct and stylize all of the footage we receive to create segments that have depth, texture and overall visual appeal, rather than the shaky, grainy look so typical of home videos.”
“Over the years, I have developed over 100 of my own Sapphire templates, using varying combinations of Glint, GlintRainbow, Blur, and LensFlare; these save me a lot of time and add a lot of style to my work. But overall, my personal favorite has to be FilmEffect, because it’s just so versatile, and since color correction is my specialty, I use it extensively to color correct and add grain and texture to a wide variety of projects,” he concludes.
