Chicago editorial and motion graphics company Daily Planet has completed the 2005 Home Game Opening Animation for the Chicago Blackhawks.
The 1:15 piece, which was shot and animated in HD, is a mixed-media combination of footage, collage and 3D animation. It features larger-than-life members of the Blackhawks skating through Chicago on their way to the United Center.
Daily Planet created the concept and storyboard, directed, animated, edited, and mixed the 4-week project, now playing at every Blackhawks home game on their new $4 million display. Ben Broder, Manager of Game Operations for the Chicago Blackhawks, chose Daily Planet based on the strength of their concept boards. "It was important for them to have a really, really cool intro because of the break last year. We needed to move beyond the model of sports animation and do something really theatrical," said Scott Marvel, Daily Planet President and Editor.
Marvel and Daily Planet Director of Motion Graphics Jason White directed the NHL players on a giant green screen constructed on the ice. "The opportunity to direct and animate an entire piece was a big step - and a lot of fun," said White. "It's great to see our work in a different format in front of a large audience," added Marvel.
