(Los Angeles, California--November 29, 2007) Digital Vision, the premier supplier of color grading and picture enhancement systems for film and television post-production announced that Los Angeles’ iO Film used the Film Master grading and finishing system to complete Digital Intermediate (DI) work on “The Mist,” from Dimension Films.

The movie, based on the Stephen King novel, features a cloud of mist that hides blood-thirsty creatures which feed on humans. It is directed by Frank Darabont and opened in theatres on November 21.

For the DI iO Film scanned the negative, then conformed and graded it using Digital Vision’s Film Master system. Keith Shaw, a 20-year veteran colourist, employed the Film Master’s grading tools to make sure that the look Darabont envisioned was delivered in the final film—turning scenes shot in the daytime into warmer, candle-lit-looking nightscapes to support feedback from screenings, maximizing detail in dark scenes, and executing a great deal of individual windowing and tracking to color-match 20 or more faces in single shots, to address the film’s large ensemble cast. During visual effects creation Shaw also used Film Master to grade back plates for the effects house and then grade the completed shots for reviews. Shaw also focused much of the grading work on the actual ‘mist.’

“The mist itself is one of the main characters in the film,” he said. “Whole scenes take place in the mist, with characters walking in an out of it. It was crucial that it looked consistent from shot to shot, and that elements dissolving in and out blended seamlessly. I did a lot of de-saturation work and matching of contrast levels from shot to shot; it was an easy process with Film Master.”
