(CINCINNATI, Ohio--June 5, 2008) Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announces that Belo Corp. has chosen the Neural-THX® Surround MultiMerge and Neural Loudness Control™ (NLC) advanced audio processing solution.
The audio solution is a collaboration between Harris and Neural Audio Corporation, the market leader in developing advanced audio and surround sound technologies. Belo Corp. is one of the nation's largest pure-play publicly traded television companies.
“Harris and Neural Audio have provided a straightforward, easy-to-integrate solution for a pressing and continuous problem that television engineers have struggled with for a long time,” said Reed Wilson, executive director of technology for Belo. “Our goal is a consistent high-quality listening experience for our television audience — without annoying sound level changes — and the advanced audio solution from Harris helps us provide just that.”
Belo will use Harris Corporation’s combined Neural-THX® Surround MultiMerge and NLC solution — the MULTIMERGE-NLC advanced audio processor — in its on-air chain to upmix stereo to 5.1 surround sound, when necessary. The solution provides a loudness-controlled output that can eliminate annoying drastic changes in volume, especially between programs and commercials.
The MULTIMERGE-NLC combines the ability to transition in a seamless fashion between 2.0 stereo and 5.1 surround sound with a simultaneous 5.1 and 2.0 output. Neural Loudness Control™ (NLC) answers the need of TV broadcasters and network operators to manage perceived loudness levels within a specific desired volume range. Unlike traditional volume management solutions, this innovative solution uses Neural Audio’s perceptual loudness measurement tool to model how the human ear will perceive the loudness of the audio content. This process accounts for many variables that can affect how audio is perceived, including spectral and density differences and temporal overlaps. By accounting for the human experience of listening, Neural Audio’s loudness measurement accommodates both stereo and multichannel audio equally well.
Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions that span the entire media delivery chain. The Harris ONE™ approach brings together highly integrated and cost-effective products that are ideal for emerging media business models and for customers upgrading media operations to digital and high-definition services.
