(Wayne, New Jersey--March 5, 2009) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has acquired a complement of Fujinon HD lenses for the Church’s newly constructed 42-foot HD production truck based in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The truck chassis was built by Sunberry, OH-based Gerling and Associates and integrated by Santa Clara, CA-based Diversified Systems. The HD mobile production unit is equipped with a new lens package that includes two XA72x9.3BESM telephoto lenses, three HA22x7.3BERD ENG-style lenses, and one HA13x4.5BERD wide angle ENG/EFP with 2X range extender. The six Fujinon lenses are mounted on Sony HDC-1500 HD cameras.
According to Sean McFarland, LDS Chief Engineer, adding a mobile production truck to the Church’s broadcast equipment inventory had been considered for several years. The project began in earnest at the end of Q1 2008, with the truck rolling out at the end of October. Since then, it has demonstrated its designed flexibility on productions ranging from live addresses by Church leaders broadcast to worldwide audiences, to recording large scale musical events with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and concerts from Brigham Young University.
“Church leaders recognized the value in owning a mobile production facility, both in savings from renting as well as the flexibility and convenience in scheduling,” McFarland explained. “A capable mobile production facility makes it possible for us to more easily provide quality production services as requested for a very large and diverse organization. Within the first week of delivery, the truck was on a range of shoots, demonstrating our strong need for it.”
In addition to serving as a remote production unit, the truck can serve as an additional control room at the Church’s Salt Lake campus to handle overflow productions. The truck is also designed to provide multi-camera 4:4:4 cinema production capability.
According to McFarland, each component for the truck was selected with an eye on flexibility and quality. “We always strive for excellence, and the choice for Fujinon HD lenses was an obvious one,” he said. “We were careful to select equipment that would add value, provide the best possible quality, and serve us well in the long run. The Church has come to rely upon our long-standing relationship with Fujinon, and we knew that adding their lenses on the truck would make a nice compliment to the Fujinon suite we have in our fixed facility. We have had great success with Fujinon; their lenses provide quality, crispness, and color imagery that is unsurpassed.”
The LDS mobile production truck will operate in North America, providing production services for the Church and its related organizations. It will be on display at the 2009 NAB Show, the annual conference and exhibition for the National Association of Broadcasters, next month in Las Vegas.
