(Van Nuys, California--September 8, 2010) Pictorvision announces that the aerial team, 2nd Unit director Brian Smrz, cinematographer Larry Blanford, aerial DP Hans Bjerno and pilot Fred North chose the Eclipse stabilizer system to shoot the exciting opening footage of the new CBS series Hawaii Five-0.
With the help of the Eclipse, second unit director Brian Smrz shot two action sequences. The first was a pre-title sequence set in Korea (Hawaii) while the Steve McGarrett character is still in the Navy. The second was the final act for a foot chase aboard a docked ship.
“I brought in Pictorvision’s Eclipse because I knew I wanted to do some very tight ‘wrap arounds’,” he adds. “Hans Bjerno was my aerial DP and I wanted the camera ship with Fred North piloting to be going around in a 360 while Hans, using the Sony F35, was at the long end of the Angeniuex 10-1 lens. In the foreground, the rappellers stayed constant while the background was spinning. It was a high energy shot. The Eclipse stability is as good as it gets, which makes a difficult shot quite a bit easier for both the cameraman and the pilot. For them, the stability allows them to make much harder turns without ‘dumping’ the system.”
“Eclipse allowed us to get dynamic shots with a lot of action and energy, as we attempted to duplicate (in a better way of course), the opening sequences of the old show,” adds pilot Fred North. “We also had to chase and capture a helicopter with a heavy fire ball. The whole thing needed a lot of speed. The Eclipse flew beautifully as usual – even at the end of a 275mm lens.”
The new version of Hawaii Five-0 begins when Detective Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Laughlin), a decorated Naval officer turned cop, returns to Oahu to investigate his father’s murder and stays after Hawaii’s governor (Jean Smart) persuades him to head up a new team: his rules, her backing, no red tape and full blanket immunity to hunt down the biggest ‘game’ in town. Joining McGarrett is Detective Danny ‘Danno’ Williams (Scott Cann) and Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim). The series is set to premiere on CBS September 20th, 2010.
