(LOS ANGELES, CA--November 5, 2010) At the AFI Conservatory, the Master of Fine Arts program of the American Film Institute, a new generation of storytellers is producing films using HP Workstations.
The HP Lab at AFI Conservatory is powered by HP Z 800 Workstations, which give AFI Fellows the advantage of more than 20 HP exclusive design innovations with features including 3-D, animation, stop-motion video, and breakthrough lighting, sounds and background characteristics. The powerful devices enable the filmmakers to take their projects to the very edge of innovation with decreased production times that turn weeks into days, days into hours, hours into minutes, and minutes into seconds.
"The marriage of art and technology in storytelling is here," said Robert Mandel, dean, AFI Conservatory. "HP's generosity and the HP Z Workstations provide AFI Fellows the latest tools to tell their tales."
Today's most demanding industry applications are being fulfilled by HP's cinema customers. Independent filmmakers and leading studios have used HP workstations to produce Hollywood blockbusters such as "Avatar," "How to Train Your Dragon," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Monsters vs. Aliens," "Bolt," the "Shrek" series, "Bee Movie" and "Happy Feet," and the special effects in "Spider-Man 3" and the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.
"It is imperative to provide the next great filmmakers with the tools they need to produce the films that will inspire their generation," said Jeff Wood, director, Worldwide Marketing, Workstations, HP. "Customers around the world choose HP workstations for the best in performance and reliability, and we need future filmmakers pushing the limits of our workstations and bringing out the best in HP."
AFI Conservatory was established in 1969 to train the next generation of storytellers and has graduated an impressive list of renowned filmmakers over its 40-plus year history. Some of these prestigious alumni will be screening their latest work at this year's AFI Fest presented by Audi, including director Ed Zwick with the world premiere of "Love and Other Drugs" and director Darren Aronofsky with "Black Swan."
Now in its 24th year, AFI Fest presented by Audi is Los Angeles' longest-running international film festival. The eight-day festival takes place in the heart of Hollywood Nov. 4-11 at the historic Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Mann Chinese 6 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and the Egyptian Theatre. It is recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the Short Films category of the annual Academy Awards. Today, HP's award-winning Z series of workstations are used to design everything from running shoes and race cars to animated characters and deep-sea submersibles, as well as to manage research labs, mission-critical IT environments and billions of dollars of tradable securities. HP's workstations are designed to meet the needs of some of the most compute-intensive industries, including animation, graphic design, computer-aided design, architecture, photography, high-definition video, manufacturing, finance, scientific imaging, and oil and gas exploration.
