Cinedeck Showcases Groundbreaking New Features For Cinedeck RX3G And MX Recorders At NAB 2013


Innovations include support for ARRIRAW, CinemaDNG, CanonRAW, JPEG 2000, OpenEXR and ACES, plus significant operational enhancements

(Las Vegas NAB Show SL14911, Nevada--April 6, 2013) Cinedeck LLC, pioneering developer of capture systems for motion picture and broadcast production, will showcase a string of ground-breaking capabilities for its dual-channel RX3G and quad-channel MX record, playback and monitoring systems, at NAB 2013 (Cinedeck Booth #SL14911).

With these new capabilities, available in forthcoming software upgrades, Cinedeck will significantly expand the toolsets of its flagship recording systems for on-set and post-production professionals working in digital cinema, episodic broadcast and live event production. Highlights include support for a wave of new cameras and formats including ARRIRAW, CinemaDNG, CanonRAW, JPEG 2000, OpenEXR, LUT shaders and ACES color workflow, plus a range of trailblazing advances that streamline and speed the transfer of recorded media into post production.

Extended Camera and Format support:

Cinedeck RX3G and MX will support the capture and realtime playback of ARRIRAW. Forthcoming upgrades will also support JPEG 2000, now the standard for DCI-compliant "cinema packages", CinemaDNG, Canon RAW and OpenEXR, the high dynamic-range (HDR) image file format developed originally by Industrial Light & Magic, and now generally available to the industry.

LUT Shaders:

Cinedeck will show the import and application of non-destructive, viewing LUTs (Look-Up Tables) to recorded content, via the on-board displays on the RX3G and MX, as well as to output monitors. This capability is especially useful when a production is shooting RAW unprocessed images.

ACES Color workflow:

Cinedeck will be supporting the IIF/ACES workflow, developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Science and Technology Council to establish a standard format to maintain color accuracy for digital production and post.

Operational Enhancements:

Playlisting – Cinedeck recorders effectively have a simple, non-linear editor, built-in to the interface, enabling a range of new playback and review capabilities. These allow users to select multiple clips to be played in a desired sequence with a clean cut between clips, and Cinedeck's playlist function allows the arrangement and re-arrangement of clips in any order and from any folder. Additionally, the playlist functions enable users to set in and out points on a clip to create sub-clips, which can be included in a playlist. Multiple sub-clips can be created from a single clip. Playlists can include different types of clips and will soon support mixed frame rates.

Enhanced RS422 Deck Control – Cinedeck RX3G and MX have long had basic RS422 capability allowing them to be controlled as a player by external devices. The latest enhancements include the ability for external devices to control the RX3G and MX as recorders, effectively allowing the user to create assemble-edits in a file-based world. Additionally Cinedeck RX3G and MX will be able to directly control other machines in a "machine-to-machine" editing mode where the Cinedeck is the recorder or the player.

Segment Record – also known as "user-defined chunking", Segment Record allows long recordings to be split into segments of specific shorter duration. During recording, each time the specified duration is reached, the current file is closed and the next segment file begins. Previous segments can be fully-accessed for playing and copying, etc.. Additionally, breaking large recordings into smaller pieces allows storage with file size limits to be utilized such as FAT32 drives.

Future developments:

Cinedeck will also preview a range of further enhancements, set to ship later in 2013.

Insert Edit – the RX3G and MX will be the first file-based recorders to support true Insert Editing of video/audio from a source to an existing MOV or MXF file, whether that source is a tape deck, non-linear editor such as Avid or FCP, or another file.
Time Delay Playback – FIFO (First In First Out) – this capability is commonly used in broadcast and network operations for applications such as back-up channel playout and live program corrections. Cinedecks will have the capability for user-programmed time-delay playback of incoming signals.

Edit While Record (EWC) – also known as "growing files", this allows users to access an ongoing recording, for playing and editing in near realtime, enabling many concurrent operations to occur before a program has even finished.
Cinedeck will also release new control applications. Currently, Cinedeck recorders have a TCP/IP based, multi-machine control interface for the Windows platform, which manages control and settings for up to 24 Cinedeck channels. Coming soon will be an updated multi-machine interface for PC, Mac as well as iOS and Android mobile devices.
