(Reading, United Kingdom--August 25, 2014) Disk Archive Corporation and Squared Paper Ltd. have announced ALTO FM, a new hybrid storage concept which overcomes the high costs that have made the cloud unusable as a storage platform for long-form broadcast content in native resolution.
ALTO FM combines the speed and accessibility of ALTO’s on-site long term disk storage technology with the ultimate security of content replication in the cloud. The system eliminates the cost of bandwidth-intensive downloads for routine operational use, since the content for production workflows is held locally on the ALTO system, and the cloud-based copies are used only as a last resort. ALTO FM offers a multi-petabyte class solution with ultra-low TCO for broadcasters and media companies who need secure and affordable storage for DPP/AS11 tapeless operations.
Squared Paper’s ALTO File Manager interface provides API-level linking to MAM, automation, and archive management systems, allowing the ALTO to be integrated and scaled from a standalone workgroup library to a very large enterprise archive. Fast search of the archive is provided through ALTO FM’s database, and the software handles connections and communications with the MAM and any automation systems, together with disk conditioning, monitoring and management. The software can be hosted on ALTO’s internal processor with a web-based UI for monitoring and triggering tasks, or on a separate server for larger configurations.
“ALTO FM’s simple web-based user interface and direct emulation of existing archive control protocols makes it easy to integrate with legacy systems and combine an unlimited number of ALTO units into one large storage system that incorporates cloud-based storage without the extreme cost of routine downloads,” said Alan Hoggarth, Managing Director, Disk Archive Corporation.
